Leopoldine (Lee) Janowski

April 6, 1924 - March 2, 2020

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished mother and grandmother, Leopoldine (nee Velikogne) Janowski just a month shy of her 96th birthday. Born in Bad Gastein, Austria to the late Franz Xavier and Anna (nee Klanschnitt) Velikogne, it was in Austria while working for the American Red Cross during World War II that Leopoldine met the love of her life - a young American soldier by the name of Walter S. Janowski. Like many women of that era, Leopoldine became a war bride and moved to the United States with her beloved husband. Affectionately known as Poldi to her family, she and Walter never called one another by their first names, but by the term of endearment “hon” - they were married over 56 years before Walter’s passing in 2001. Leopoldine was always proud that she was employed with the Fisher Body Division of General Motors Corporation for 32 years. In her younger days, Leopoldine enjoyed visiting family in Austria, vacations in Beach Haven, trips to Atlantic City, gardening, and her favorite pastime, keeping a pristine home. But her ultimate joy came from the deep, dedicated love she had for her immediate family.

In addition to her beloved husband and her parents, Leopoldine was predeceased by her sister Maria (Mitzi) Velikogne Katzlberger, and her brothers Anton (Tony) and Franz (Frankie) Velikogne and their respective spouses.

Leopoldine will be greatly missed by her two devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita A. Topper and her husband Robert; and Lisa Janowski Glagola and her husband Michael; her loving grandson James M. Kais and his wife Elizabeth (Beth) Howzen Kais, and many nieces and nephews both in the United States and abroad.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel located in Morris Hall, One Bishops Drive, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648. Visiting hours will be at the Chapel before mass from 10:30a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hamilton, NJ 08610. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in Leopoldine Janowski’s name to Morris Hall Residents’ Fund, 1 Bishop Drive, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
